- Read to and with your children every day!
- Talk about what you've read and the pictures in the book. Ask children what they liked best or if the book reminded them of anything.
- Have children read poems or stories more than once so they can become comfortable with the words and increase their reading speed.
- Ask children to read to their siblings or other family members.
- When your children come home from school, encourage them to discuss their day with you, asking them to tell you detailed stories about what they did or learned.
- Review and discuss your child's homework.
- Continue speaking to or reading with your child in your native language. It can be fun to find books in your native language as well as English and read and compare both.
- Encourage your children to repeat rhymes or poems they've learned in school.
- Send a note to Mrs. Avery at your child's school (or e-mail Mrs. Avery at averyd@region10ct.org) if you have any questions or concerns.
