READINGReading a book can take us anywhere we want to go . . . a far away country, down by the pond in the back
forty, out into space, back in history or forward in time, and to a fantasy world . . . We can solve mysteries,
learn about people and fascinating topics, laugh out loud with jokes, and shed a tear with poetry . . . Books and
reading are integral to learning. This year students will be encouraged to read and read some more.
The Nutmeg nominees and Newbury Award winning authors are wonderful places to begin the search for the
many sensational books available for fifth graders. A reading log is used for recording the title, author and
pages of our reading, as well as a brief response to the literature read that day. Students should enjoy reading for
thirty-minute (or more) intervals five or more days per week.
