Welcome to Mrs. Melingonis' page!
My name is Mrs. Lisa Melingonis and I teach sixth grade social studies on the Emerald team at Har-Bur Middle School. I have been teaching for twelve years in Region 10, most of which was spent as a fifth grade teacher. I am looking forward to a new year as a sixth grade teacher!
In sixth grade, students will explore the development of ancient civilizations in Asia, Africa and Europe. Their course of study will provide them with the major themes of history and social science concepts necessary to gain a cultural perspective of the world. Students will be encouraged to discover how people lived in the ancient times, and how their descendants live in these present times, and to inquire into the impact these cultures have had on their own lives and origins. New to this school year's Social Studies curriculum is a focus on geography of the regions of the world and a modern-day view of these regions.
Our Ancient Civilization units of study are:
Geography and Culture
The Middle East, Mesopotamia, the Fertile Crescent, Israel
North Africa, Egypt, Kush
South Asia, India
East Asia, China
Southern Europe, Greece
I believe that with a positive attitude and effort, we can all be successful!
I strongly encourage parents to review the student planner on a daily basis to ensure assignments are completed and to keep up on current team events. I will also use the student planner to write notes home if necessary. I can be reached by email for further correspondence.
I have been married to Stephen Melingonis for 10 years and we have 2 wonderful sons. Hayden is in second grade and Greysen started kindergarten this year. We have a dog, a Weimaraner named Vander and twin black cats, named Luca and Nico. I grew up and currently live in Bristol. I went to college at the University of Rhode Island where I received my degree in Elementary Education and English. I received my Master's Degree from Walden University in Elementary Reading and Literacy. Some of my hobbies include reading, swimming, painting, and cooking.

** Many times students in our 6th grade Social Studies classes want to read more about some of our Ancient Civilizations. Over the past few years, I have had several students ask for fictional book recommendations that take place in Ancient Egypt, Greece, China, Rome, Mesopotamia and India. Below are a few links that offer lists of books that relate to our curriculum. (Please note: I have not read many of these books, but simply found websites and lists that offer Young Adult titles relating to our curriculum. Parents, please preview these books before offering them to your child to read)
